Top-notch backcountry adventure only a few hours from Boise. One hour from many hot springs. A Challenging Winter Adventure. Beautiful Views of the mountains and the sky. Inexpensive get together for families or up three couples. Good for Nordic Skiing, A/T Skiing, or Snowshoeing. Dog Friendly.
Gaze at the stars on a crisp night from one of Idaho Park & Rec's best backcountry yurts! Cook a meal in the middle of nowhere with all of the provided utensils. Sleep to the glow of a crackling wood fire as the cozy stove keeps you warm through the night.
The adventure begins at Beaver Creek Summit Parking Lot, this is located in the Boise National Forest, a few hours north of Boise and a little less than one hour north of Idaho City on Idaho's Highway 21. The destination, Stargaze Yurt (44.0168, -115.6317), is only 1.3 miles up a foot-packed trail. Depending on how many lbs you have strapped to your back, this hike can really get your blood pumping.
If you have an adventurous family, this can be a great family getaway. Plan on lugging the little ones up on your back. Otherwise, this yurt makes the most romantic of backcountry getaways, or an excellent place to convene with some friends for a wonderful meal and night of socializing far away from all of the hustle and bustle.
PARKING: The Beaver Creek Summit Park N' Ski lot is on Highway 21, about 25 miles north of Idaho City. It is located just before mile marker 63. You must purchase an Idaho Park N’ Ski permit during winter months.
THE HIKE: The trail is not hard to find and once you are on it, it is marked by posts with little signs that remind you that you are on the right track. From the parking area you follow highway 21 about 300 yards north until the road begins to descend down the other side of the summit. When you see a sign marked "Stargaze Trail," turn left and leave the highway. The trail traverses up the hill for about 1.2 miles and then you must take a left at the yellow sign for another .1 miles up through the trees. The yurt is visible from the parking lot and it is best to identify it before you leave your vehicle.
