Description

This hike takes you to three high mountain lakes, miles from any civilization. With jagged rocky peaks and thick forests surrounding the area, this trek is one you do not want to pass up.

Your journey will start with a rural drive about 60 minutes from Sandpoint, ID. Once you hit the dirt road, hold on because its quite the bumpy drive (AWD vehicle is recommended). You will continue on a dirt road for nearly 20 miles, however, don't let this halt your journey, the drive is incredible with amazing views and pull offs along the way.

Once you finally reach the trailhead you will be greeted by the beautiful lower lake. Roman Nose has three lakes to chose from, each providing different features. The lower lake is easily accessible and does not require any hiking. The middle lake has more fish than you'd imagine, crystal clear waters, and a beautiful waterfall. And the upper lake has big fish, incredible views, and glaciers surrounding. If you plan to go to one of the two upper lakes, it is about a 60 minute hike.

At the middle lake there is a beautiful waterfall. There is no trail up to it but if you are adventurous enough, you can make it there. There are also plenty of huckleberry bushes along the way, so your journey might take longer than 60 minutes if you love berries!

The fishing, hiking, and views are absolutely incredible up there. So pack your bag and enjoy the hike!

Roman Nose High Mountain Lakes Reviews

Easy enough for kids. You drive a lot of elevation and get to enjoy views without too much effort. A great candidate for an intro to backpacking as you can bail or go back to the car for supplies, if necessary, without it ruining the trip.

Popular area because the main lake has a wood boardwalk around it. The upper lake is a short 2 miles in, mostly incline but not too bad. Some pretty nice and roomy campsites around the upper lake as well
