Walk in the footsteps of River Pirates and Hollywood at this amazing landmark.

Located in a Southern Illinois State Park bearing its name, Cave-in-Rock is a 55 ft wide limestone cavern that sits along the banks of the Ohio River. Once a site of Murderers, River Pirates, and a brothel is now a crown jewel of the Illinois State Park system.

The beauty of the area and the dark history of the area led Hollywood to shoot scenes for "How The West Was Won" in 1962.

Today, the short hike from the parking lot leads down about 50-100 steps to the entrance to the cave. Inside you will see a large room with cave writing dating back to the 1820's and 1830's. There is also a large fissure in the ceiling of the cave that allows some light and sometimes a waterfall to reach the floor.

Once you have had your fill of the cave, begin your trek back up the steps and enjoy the views from 100 foot cliffs over looking the Ohio River and Western Kentucky.

Nearby there is a park lodge, picnic areas, campground, and other scenic trails.
