Description

This trail was developed as part of the rails to trails effort in Indiana. Vandalia trail is a diamond in the rough, not many people know about the trail. It is a great trail for hiking and running.

Vandalia Trail runs west 12 miles from Amo to Greencastle along what used to be old rail road tracks. I regularly go to Vandalia with friends for long runs. We will typical run 5 to 6 miles out and flip it back around. About 3 miles in, you'll pass through a small Indiana town with a small, old downtown strip. This adds a nice stereotypical feel to what Indiana is like with its many small country towns. I have never seen the second half of the trail after our 6 miles out. There are no bathrooms along the trail or at the trailhead. If you're lucky one of the small shops in Coatsville may be open.

For running purposes it is all grass, dirt, gravel, and flat which feels great on your legs. Along with being a good trail for a run or hike, Vandalia also has an equestrian trail which runs next to it. This trail gives a great view of the Indiana country and travels through a couple small, Midwestern town called Coatsville.
