Mines of Spain is a great place to stop if you're rolling through Dubuque. Lots of locals go here for picnics, a hike or a great view of the Mississippi River.

The best trail is by far Horseshoe Bluffs. It's beautiful at anytime of the year but AMAZING with all of the fall foliage. On one side of the limestone bluff is the Mississippi River and the other side is a beautiful valley you can walk up the middle of. I have only hiked but there is a canoe landing at the mouth of Catfish Creek near the Mississippi river. The park has something for everyone-wetlands, creeks, forests, prairies, cropland, meadows! There's tons of Dubuque history in the park and Julien Dubuque is even buried on site.
