This stunning hike is just north of Dublin's city centre on the Howth Head peninsula. Walk through a town with the best fish and chips and artisan gelato, watch sail boats float by on quiet beaches, and trek along some gorgeous Irish cliffs.

Starting from the Dart train station in town, follow the green arrows along the promenade that lines the harbour. These arrows are on lamp posts, fairly small, along with other colored arrows for other trails. It can be difficult to first spot them, but if you follow along the harbour, in a meadow there is a large map detailing the different trails on the peninsula. There is also a stand with brochures and maps of the area.

Once you spot the arrows, it's fairly easy to follow along the path. Just make sure you follow the green* arrows, because you'll end up on some other trail. At first, it doesn't seem like your typical hiking trail. It's pretty much a walk on the promenade between harbor and town, but eventually, towards the end of the town, you'll reach a dirt trail that'll take you along the cliffs.

Before the trail turns unpaved, there are little beaches and areas you can stop at. There's a particular beach right where the cliffs start. At the bottom of the cliffs are small caves that you can get to. Warning, though, to get to the caves you have to walk along huge stones and boulders covered in slippery moss and sea grass.

Once on the unpaved trail, you'll be walking along cliffs for pretty much the rest of the way. Towards the end, it'll turn back into paved roads in a small neighborhood. Just follow the green arrows on the road until you reach downtown Howth again.

At the end of the hike, go for some fish and chips at any of the restaurants and some gelato from Amore artisan gelato. You could also get one of the famous and popular 99 cent cones (not really 99 cents... more like 2 euro) at Teddy's ice cream shop. Lay back on the grass anywhere in town or sit at the pier to enjoy your food.

Hike the Cliff Path Loop Reviews

We lucked out and the sun was shining the day we did this hike! It is beautiful! The views are fabulous and the trail is easy to follow. Be sure to grab a coffee or sandwich in the Happy Pear at the start/end of your hike!

I spent 5 months living in Dublin and did this hike with every visitor that came to town! Beautiful, very easy, and a refreshing break from the city. It gives the perfect exposure to the beautiful UK cliff lines!

I lived in Dublin for 4 months and this was my FAVORITE escape! It's an easy hike and quiet if you avoid weekends and late afternoons. Beautiful scenery and nice to get some fresh air by the sea.

The DART train from Dublin makes this hike super easy to get to, even if you don't have a car. The views are beautiful as the trail hugs the cliffs' edge. Beware that if you are afraid of heights, this may not be your trail. Four stars instead of five because this trail is crowded, especially when the DART trains arrive. I hiked on a blustery November day and had a hundred hikers for company.

Great easy hike. One of the most scenic hikes I have been on!
