7 Photos That Will Inspire You to Explore Black Elk Peak In the Winter

Black Elk Peak is the Highest Point East of the Rockies and in the winter you will definitely feel that it is the highest point. You will feel like you are in a much bigger mountain range than where you are.

Black Elk Peak (formerly known as Harney Peak) is a great hike any time of the year. If you decide to do it in the Winter be prepared for snow, ice and wind. Be aware that temperatures and weather can change quickly and plan accordingly. When you decide to make the hike up you will not be disappointed, even if your photos don't look like these (disclaimer: Harney Peak does not always look like this... I hiked up in a storm the afternoon before I took these, camped out in single digits not counting wind chill which was well below zero. And woke up early to get myself in position to capture the magical morning golden hour.)

The Harney Lookout Tower was build by the Civilivan Conservation Corps in the late 1930's and served as a lookout tower for forest fires.

Looking South, you can see Cathedral Spires and Little Devil's Tower just on the edge of the clouds.
