The Pantheon is a former Roman temple turned Catholic Church in the city of Rome, Italy

The Pantheon is one of the best preserved buildings from ancient Rome famous for its large circular domed cella.  Since the Renaissance, there have been several important burials here, including Raphael the famous painter. Many relics and priceless pieces of art are on display to visitors.  The Pantheon receives millions of tourists every year.

An earlier temple commissioned by Marcus Agrippa sat on this site during the reign of Augustus from 27 BC to 14 AD.  Emperor Hadrian had the temple rebuild around 126 AD after the original temple burned down.  The exact date of the rebuild is unknown because Hadrian kept the inscribed date from the original temple.  In 609 the Byzantine emperor Phocas gave the building to Pope Boniface IV who converted it into a church.  Being converted to a church likely saved this building from falling into ruin like many other building from this time period.

Visit the Iconic Pantheon in Rome Reviews

The details within the Pantheon were beautiful. For being a small building there was a lot to see. So much artwork and history here. During my visit to Rome a rare snow storm occurred which closed the Pantheon until they could clear the snow out of the building due to the circular hole in the ceiling.

Although as already mentioned the place can be hugely crowded, I found that it bothered me less than other famous monuments in Rome (such as Fontana di Trevi). The Pantheon is amazing and will make you owe with admiration. Try to learn a bit of the history behind it, as it will make you appreciate it more. Sometimes also, the square outside the Pantheon is packed with activities and music and you can rest and have fun if you need to wait in a long queue.

As the title says, this is an iconic and historical place in Rome. Because of this, though, it is likely to be very crowded with tourists
