How to Plan the Perfect Winter Day at the Oregon Coast
Experience the Oregon Coast in a way that many people never will!

Most people wouldn’t think of January when imagining the perfect beach day with your friends. At least not on the Oregon Coast, that is! Something that a lot of people don’t know is that it can actually be a lot warmer on the Oregon Coast in the winter, than anywhere else in state! The ocean, being such a large mass of water, controls the temperature of the air and keeps it fairly moderate.
It is common to have a day on the coast that is 20-25 degrees warmer than it is inland. For example, two weeks ago it was in the low twenties where I live in Corvallis, Oregon (Go Beavs), but when we arrived in Newport, it was 52 degrees! And it is only about an hour away. Just make sure before you leave that the weather is clear at the coast, otherwise it will most likely be a stormy, wet, and windy day! If you wake up and the weather is calling for a great day, be spontaneous.

It may just be because I am an Oregon kid to the core, but I wore my board shorts and a t-shirt. Yes, I always have to jump in the ocean no matter the season! If you’re not that extreme, it was perfect weather to just wear pants and a sweatshirt. One of the best things about these surprise warm days on the coast is that no one is there! You basically have the whole coastline to yourself. We decided to go to Otter Rock and Devils Punchbowl. Typically these areas are packed with people but we had the place to ourselves for the whole afternoon.

Don’t forget some of the most important essentials to make a successful beach trip. You’ll need firewood, friends, and food! Some of my best memories are fun spontaneous winter trips to the beach. Pack out the car with some great people and that’s all you need for a good time! It is also really important to be aware of the beach rules. Check to make sure fires are permitted. And as always, leave no trace!!!
When the sun finally set and we ran out of firewood, we went into town for some dinner at Chowder Bowl in the Nye District. The Sandbar is a connecting bar to the restaurant. After dinner we crossed over there for quick game of pool before heading home.

Life is so much more enjoyable when you allow for spontaneity. I encourage you to take a trip with your closest friends. Go jump in the ocean in the middle of winter. You will be better for it. Just remember that the perfect days aren’t always the ones that are planned out.
