There are few waterfalls in Kansas. And yet one of the most spectacular is not well known... even to people that live in the area. It is not publicized. After recent rains Geary State Lake overflows and down a 35 foot drop. On most days you can take in the waterfall all for yourself.

Geary Lake Falls is only active after recent rains. It is formed by the overflow outlet of Geary State Fishing Lake. It is great fun to view the falls from the top and then venture down to the base. Both offer unique and interesting vantage points.

There are no signs or directions to this waterfall. To get to Geary Lake Falls from I-70 in Junction City, take Highway 77 and drive 6 miles south. Turn west onto State Lake Road. Go about 2,000 feet and turn left into the park. Drive a few hundred feet and park somewhere convenient.

Hike about a mile across the dam. There is no official trail, but there is a noticeable path worn by other visitors through the vegetation. As you near the waterfall, you may hear running water. Follow the unofficial trail into the woods. You won't have to venture far to see the top of the waterfall.

Once you are ready to explore the base of the waterfall, you'll need to follow the trail down a fairly steep hill. Be careful. You may have to wrestle mud and trees as you make your way down.

During the summer time be watchful of snakes at the base of the waterfall. I recommend wearing insect repellent to keep away ticks and chiggers.
