Don't let the morbid-sounding name scare you off from this one! Dog Slaughter Falls is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the Bluegrass (and there are lots to choose from)!

Getting There

When headed towards Cumberland Falls State Resort Park on Kentucky-90, watch for a gravel forest service road on the right (FS-195).

The Dog Slaughter Falls Trail has two trailheads along this road. The first one is about 0.8 miles down the gravel road, but I'm going to suggest that you start from the second trailhead, which is about 2.7 miles down the road. Starting from the first trailhead will add a little more than double the distance to your hike.

Both trailheads will be on your left (assuming you are coming from KY-90) and can be tricky to spot if you're not watching for them.

NOTE: The distances for this adventure assume you are starting from the second trailhead on Forest Road 195.

The Hike

The hike itself is quite scenic, following along a lovely, boulder-filled stream. The trail itself is of intermediate level and is moderately trafficked, which means you shouldn't have any trouble following it.

Take your time enjoying the sites along the stream until you reach the falls. At this point, you will be viewing the falls from above. Watch for a path on your right that meanders down the hill to get to the bottom.

Viewing the falls from the bottom is a great time to sit and enjoy the scenery, bust out the camera, or even enjoy a packed lunch.

Once finished, simply hike back the way you came to return to your car.
