Description

The Flat Lick Falls Recreation area, located in Gray Hawk, Kentucky, features an easy hike to a very picturesque waterfall.

The hike begins at the parking area, just before the restrooms. Following a short, paved path will bring you to a small overlook of Flat Lick Falls. While this overlook is nice, the real treat comes when you venture to the base of the falls.

Look for a small dirt path to the right of the overlook. I've been to this spot several times and the path has never been marked, but it is maintained and is usually extremely easy to pick up. Follow this for a short distance and you will cross a footbridge over Flat Lick Creek. The falls are just past this bridge.

From the base of the falls you are greeted with the view of the majestic Flat Lick Falls plummeting into the large splash pool in front of you. This spot is pretty much a photographer's paradise!

The actual trail is very short, and up to a lookout point, which is cool. Then there’s a longer trail that takes you all around the stream down to then bottom of flat lick falls, this is really scenic and worth the hike! The locals have a way across the top of the stream and down the side which is very steep, but really short. It’s a fun hike. When I got to the bottom of the falls, it felt a lot like being in a grotto on the little mermaid. I could’ve hung out on those rocks for hours! I also hiked this alone in February.

Flat Lick Falls is one of my favorite waterfalls in the state of Kentucky. It's an extremely easy hike to get to, which means I can easily integrate it into other photography trips, and it's a beautifully picturesque scene!
