I'll take any adventure you give me! Love to backpack, kayak, canoe, climb, and anything else you give me an opportunity to do!

Everybody in the area always talks about Starved Rock as the place to go but seems to pay no attention to this gem just on the other side of the highway. Matthiessen still remains one of my favorite spots in the state, and I much highly prefer it over it's cousin Starved Rock. I have been in the middle of the summer and saw less than 10 people throughout the entire hike. It is complete with canyons, waterfalls, rivers, you name it! I'm already planning another trip out there this month.

Unfortunately when you find yourself deep in the Midwest, there isn't a ton to explore. In this regard, the trail is great! There's small canyons, waterfalls, and a large river with a few spots for rock jumping. The biggest downside is the traffic. I have been a few times and it gets fairly crowded, and depending on the season and time of day, you can be completely stopped waiting for others to get through obstacles ahead of you. If you are in the area, it is definitely worth checking out but don't expect solitude like you see in these awesome photos!
