A great hike into the Mt. Rose WIlderness with scenic views, wildlife, and plenty of options that is for the avid or casual hiker.

Starting at about 6500 ft of elevation Jones Creek Trail is a 9.2 mi loop trail starting in Galena Creek Park. The park itself is very accessible off of Mt. Rose Highway, parking is free, and there is plenty of it during a typical weekend. When entering the park simply follow the signs that say "trailhead". There is a good amount of trail maps to be found as well. The trail has an overall elevation gain of 2000 ft, if you choose to take a detour and go to Church pond, but if you choose to stay on the trail, the elevation gain is only about 1500 ft.

The trail is very well maintained and hard to lose, unless there happens to be some snow on the ground. I personally say the best time to hike here is February-April because the temperature is not too hot, nor too cold. The trail is very well shaded by dense pines entering the Mt. Rose Wilderness so bring layers because the temperature is variable. Beginners can hike this trail, however one thing to consider is the high elevation makes it very hard for people not from the area because you often find yourseld twice as winded. If you go online to Galena Creek Park's website, you can find a pdf of the trail maps and download to your phone beforehand. A good majority of the park is dog and horse friendly too.
