About Goose Bay Cabin
Overview
Note: Goose Bay Cabin remains closed due to damage sustained from heavy snow loading. For more information, please contact the Glacier Ranger District at (907) 783-3242. Goose Bay Cabin is a great place for recreation, relaxation and sightseeing on Prince William Sound. This is a prime spot for winter recreationists, but a variety of activities are offered throughout the year for backcountry enthusiasts. This remote site can be accessed by a 45-minute float plane trip from Anchorage or a boat ride from Whittier, depending on conditions. In mid-November, the bay freezes over, making transportation to the cabin a challenge. Guests are responsible for their own travel arrangements and safety, and must bring several of their own amenities.Recreation
The area around Goose Bay offers year-round recreational opportunities. Hiking and kayaking are popular summer pastimes. The terrain on Culross Island attracts backcountry and cross-country skiers in winter and early spring, as well as snowshoers. A ski or snowshoe adventure to the high point on Culross Island offers spectacular views of Prince William Sound and the jagged, glaciated peaks of the Chugach Range.
The cabin makes a good base for fishing and shrimping expeditions in Culross Passage. Deer hunting can be good here in the fall.
Facilities
The 12x14 foot cabin sleeps six and comes equipped with wooden bunks, a table, benches, a propane stove for heat and an outside pit toilet. The facility does meet accessibility standards, but the ramp leading to the cabin from the water is only wheelchair-accessible during high tide. At low tide, guests may have to walk through some mud to get to the ramp from the water. Propane may be available onsite during the summer season only (June-August).
No electricity or water is available. Guests need to bring their own supply of drinking water, as well as propane between October and mid-May. The propane stove has the same hookup as a standard gas barbecue grill.
Items such as a cook stove, lanterns or flashlights, bedding, sleeping pads, cooking gear, garbage bags and toilet paper are not provided. All trash must be packed out, and guests are expected to clean the cabin before departure.
Natural Features
Goose Bay is at the head of a narrow waterway on the east side of Culross Passage. The cabin is tucked into a small lagoon on the east side of Goose Bay on the western shore of Culross Island. Fragile muskeg, tall grasses and evergreen trees surround the cabin. Views from the front porch reveal a small waterfall and the gentle, evergreen-forested slopes across the bay.Visitors to the area may see bald eagles soaring overhead or catch a glimpse of a brown bear (learn about bear safety). Lucky guests may spot orcas or Dall's porpoises frolicking in the waters of Prince William Sound on the approach to Goose Bay.

If you’ve never been to the park, Wrangell is 13.2 million acres, the largest national park in the United States, roughly the size of Switzerland. Access is limited. There is only one main road into the center of the park, which dead ends in the town of Kennecott, a historic copper mining area. I have marked on the map as far as you are allowed to take your personal vehicle. In order to get to t...

Disclaimer: We do not recommend entering the caves as the ice can become unstable, especially in the warmer months. If you are in Kennicott and have the physical ability to get to these caves, make this the top of your priority list. You'll walk down the path heading north out of the town towards the root glacier. The path is a mile and a half long but to get to the ice caves you'll jump off the ...

Starting in the town of Kennicott you'll hike on the trail leading north outside of the town for a mile and a half. The trail will end at the edge of the glacier and this is where you put on your crampons. I would also suggest putting on your crampons at the edge of the glacier and not while on it to avoid possibly slipping on the ice!If you have not used crampons before I would suggest you get ...

This journey begins at the northern terminus of the historic Kennecott Mines, following the Root Glacier trail to the north. Follow this trail between 1-2 miles until you reach a split in the trail. Follow the split to the southeast and continue along this trail until you reach another split. If you continue to follow the trail south from the split it will take you to the top precipice of the K...

Traversing the glacier can be a whole day experience in and of itself. Make sure to set aside enough time to explore. I'd plan on at least 3-4 hours total travel time round trip on the glacier alone. The Donoho Lakes are a series of lakes that exist on a narrow strip of flat land between two glaciers that is a blast to explore. Make sure that you go with at least one companion as the trail is b...

If you have already stepped foot into Wrangell-St. Elias, you probably arrived via bush plane or by heroically navigating the relentlessly brutal, pothole smothered McCarthy Road. Once across the Kennecott River footbridge, you must take the shuttle from the river's edge to Kennecott (NB: the shuttle services to Kennecott in the winter). Once dropped off in Kennecott, the Visitor's Center is wi...
