There is nothing like falling asleep to the sound of the waves to wake up to find seals playing right outside your tent door. At Thornhill Broome State Beach, you can pitch your tent right on the sand with the water only a few steps away. Each campsite has it's own fire pit and picnic table. The water is great, the waves are chill, and this will quickly become one of your new favorite spots, as it did for me.

Take PCH through Malibu towards Oxnard and the campground will be on your left. There is no day use here and you can drive right to your campsite.

During the summer, make reservations or arrive really early to nab a site. Spaces can fill up quickly.

There is access to a hiking trail across PCH.

Camp at Thornhill Broome State Beach Reviews

I decided to take a solo camping trip north of LA to clear my mind a couple weeks ago. It was last minute, and a beautiful weekend, so most campsites I visited were full. I went from Malibu to Ojai to Ventura to no avail. I drove up and down the PCH, but all I saw was RV after RV. Feeling defeated, I stopped at the Ventura In and Out to find happiness in a Double-Double- but even the restaurant was too full. I got back in my car and started back to LA, and that is when I saw a few tents on the beach. I turned into the Thornill entrance, and was told that they had plenty of sites available still. I paid the $32 for the night, and drove down the beach and set up my camp. I was able have a great evening of writing and reading. I hadn't brought anything to start a fire, but there were branches and wood left behind from a previous camper. The sites are pretty long, each having a picnic table and fire pit. There are a few outdoor bathrooms and garbage bins for your trash. I put my tent pretty close to the ocean, lining up with the tents that were already set up, thinking it would be safe. In the middle of the night, I woke up to crashing waves that sounded like they were right next to me. Luckily they were still pretty far away, but just be careful as the sound is startling, and a storm could probably reach pretty far up the site. All in all it was a great little campsite, with amazing views of the ocean.
