Looking for a hike with great views in LA but want to avoid the crowds of Griffith Park? The Brand Library Loop is a little known secret that will introduce you to the far greater expanse of the Verdugo Mountain Range (commonly referred to as the Burbank Hills). Make it to the top and you will be treated to a 360 degree view of Pasadena, Downtown LA, Griffith Park, Studio City and even Catalina Island and Pacific Ocean.

Your adventure will start at the Brand Library parking lot. Walk behind the library towards the gated day use area and you will find the start of the trail on your right, Las Flores MTWY.

The first half-mile rises over 500 feet to a plateau, equipped with benches, a park map and views of Griffith Park and Downtown LA. Next is the grueling 1000 foot/1-mile climb to the first in a string of radio towers. This portion is steep and provides no shade so be sure to bring plenty of water and sun protection. At the top you will meet with the Beaudry South Motorway, turn left and follow the road north 0.6 miles to the first radio tower. This is your first opportunity of a 360 degree view of Pasadena, Downtown LA, Griffith Park, Studio City and even Catalina Island and Pacific Ocean. This point also is your first chance to see a small number of the various other routes and roadways that you can follow while on the mountain. After taking a break in the shade and enjoying the view, walk north for ½ mile on Beaudry South MTWY, this will take you to the KROQ radio tower. After passing the tower be sure to continue onto the Verdugo Motorway, follow the road for one mile until you reach a 3-way intersection marked by a park bench and yellow road sign. Follow the dirt fire road marked Brand Park Motorway. This road, which is the final leg of your adventure, is comprised of a series of switch backs descending over 2000ft in just over 3.5 miles leading you back to the Brand Library parking lot and your car.

Brand Library Loop Reviews

This is a great hike when you want to have a place all to yourself. Take hiking poles, because some areas can be steep. Convenient parking, bathrooms, and a drinking fountain, right off of the parking lot. It can get hot, in the middle of the day, so go early. Wear layers also. The shady parts are cooler and the exposed areas are hot.

This is a great little loop to do when you're in the Glendale area but don't have time to send it up Wilson (or Baldy). I followed the exact route except for the ending -- instead of taking the road down I hopped off on the trail on the left about a quarter mile from the intersection. DO NOT MAKE THIS MISTAKE. It ended up being a downhill MTB trail and Holy Toledo was it steep. Pretty epic views, though, so possibly worth the pain. All in all, great 5+ mile hike. Only saw two other people after the 1 mile steep climb.
