Cavern Point & Potato Harbor Loop

Tucked away in the Pacific Ocean just 25 miles from the coast, the Channel Islands are one of Southern California’s hidden gems. With towering cliffs and isolated beaches that hug the coast, this place makes you feel worlds away from home. Channel Islands National Park is comprised of five islands and if you find yourself not knowing where to begin, a day trip to Scorpion Anchorage, located at the Eastern Portion of Santa Cruz could be a good start. There are plenty of trails to choose from, but a hike up to Potato Harbor and Cavern Point will not disappoint.

The trail to Cavern Point starts at Scorpion Anchorage via “Cavern Point Loop Trail.” It continues and turns into “North Bluff Trail”, which then takes you to Potato Harbor. It loops back into Scorpion Canyon and ends right back where you started. It is an easy 5-mile trail that is marked.

Keep in mind you are in the middle of the Pacific and there is nothing to buy or rent there. Plan your day and pack all your food, water, and gear into and out of the Islands. Oh, and don’t forget to take your trash with you, as there are no trash cans. You will find water and restrooms in both the campgrounds on the Island, though. Getting here is easy; Island Packers Boat Company runs daily trips to the Island.
