Massive boulder features surrounded by alien-like boojum and enormous cardon in the heart of Baja California.

Cataviña is place unlike any other in Baja and therefor unlike anywhere else in the world. Massive boulder-features akin to Joshua Tree or the Alabama hills are surrounded by deep-cut washes, pinturas rupestres (painted caves), towering tentacle-like boojum, and massive cardon cacti, creating an otherwordly landscape that most only take brief note of as they push south towards more well-known locations (or surf breaks).

The area is well-worth exploring, and its remoteness has made for a plethora of fantastic campsites that provide solitude and quietude, even for 2wd and low clearance vehicle (and a driver who knows how to avoid sand).

Cataviña is on Highway 1 118 km south of El Rosario and 106 km north of Highway 12 to Bahia de Los Angeles. Most of the campsites can be found to the north of the small town on unmarked dirt road turnoffs. Exploring these are half the fun, the other half is finding the campsite that feels perfect for you.

There is absolutely no cell service in Cataviña and the small town itself has one market and a small hotel. The road is often partially washed out so as with anywhere driving in Baja, pay attention to the road.

There are no bathrooms or services of any kind in this area, so bring your own food and water, and pack out everything you bring with you. Always practice the principles of Leave No Trace.
