Explore El Aguacero

Carretera Internacional, Mexico

Description

Added by Garrett Gossett

The scenery, the scenery, the scenery! Very few places on earth will leave you awe inspired like this. Green jungle vegetation backed with waterfalls and a river make for an amazing set up. From the simple adventurer to the professional photographer to the avid hiker, this place has something for everyone. You're likely to see some exotic birds flying around!

El Aguacero is the most mystical waterfall-filled canyon you’ve ever seen. Imagine Zion National Park and Havasupai with lush green jungle. Now imagine a canyon with 724 steps that switchback down to the canyon floor, where a warm water river is running below. Once at the bottom, the canyon walls reach up on both sides of you in stunning fashion. A set of waterfalls spill over one side of the canyon through the lush green vegetation, making for one of the most amazing set ups a person could ask for.

The town of Ocozocoautla is located 92.5 km west of San Cristobal De Las Casas, the central launch off city for most travelers, on the 190D highway. From Ocozocoautla drive roughly 15 km to the turnoff for El Aguacero. The road has clear signage pointing visitors in the right direction. Once at the turn off, the road turns to dirt, although it is well enough maintained that a 4x4 is not needed. Follow this road for 3 km until you reach the entrance for El Aguacero.

It costs 30 pesos per person to enter the site, and another 50 pesos per group if you choose to camp. The small grassy field and dirt lot at the top of the stairs is where you camp, and feels safe at night. Whether sleeping in a car or a tent, either is permitted. In addition, dogs are allowed in the site.

From the parking lot, you descend 724 stairs to the canyon floor where a river runs. The level of the river is dependent upon recent rainfall. Once at the bottom of the stairs you walk 200 meters to the left to the waterfall. In total, the hike down shouldn’t take longer than 15 or 20 minutes.

If you arrive in the morning before 9 or 10 you should have the place to yourself, which is hugely recommended. You can really experience the magic of El Aguacero when you’re alone or with a friend or loved one. You can climb the rocks up to the waterfall and stand underneath, and if you are in the mood for a longer hike, you can follow the river trail in either direction up and down the river.
