An exploration of a mystical land, the land of the Seri people. The route runs along the coast, where most of the time, you will have Isla Tiburon, the biggest island in Mexico, to the right side. Its an exploration of the body, mind and soul.
This adventure is a life changing 90km (56mi) trail run along the coast of the Sonoran Desert in Mexico. The route takes you from El Desemboque, a small Seri village, to Bahía de Kino, along La Isla del Tiburón (the biggest island in Mexico), through the most amazing landscapes. It will give you the chance to know the mystical and rich culture of the Seri tribe, that still inhabit this lands.
We recommend that you start the run at 5:30am from the tiny coastal town of El Desemboque. You have to follow the only big trail that goes south along the coast. We recommend that you have one all terrain vehicle following you to carry all provisions needed (see list pack list below). Every 10km, you should make a quick 5 minute stop to recharge camelbaks and load them with quick energy food. Once you hit the 42km mark, you can make a right turn on a smaller dirt trail that will take you to a small virgin beach, where you should get your legs in the cold ocean to cool the body down. Here you might as well have a bigger lunch. We had 1 organic beans, quinoa, spinach, avocado and turkey breast burrito. Don’t stall too much, get back on the main trail road and keep on running. Next landmark you will hit is the town of Punta Chueca, which is about mark 60 km. Punta Chueca is the main Seri people town. Last stretch is from Punta Chueca to Bahia de Kino. This stops being a trail road and becomes a paved road, a small highway. You will be lucky if you see more than 4 cars, there not many. You have to be careful not to be burnt out, because this last stretch is almost all uphills. It will get mentally and physically difficult, but you are almost there. Bahía de Kino, the end, will appear after going up a hill in front of you. From there all the way to the ocean it's a downhill. When you enter the town of Bahía Kino, take the first right turn you can, that will evidentially take you to the ocean. Once on the beach, we recommend again that you dive in the ocean to cool your whole body down. Watch the sunset, hug, cry, smile and celebrate! Next day its a must to eat sea food in Bahía Kino. There are plenty of restaurants, go for the oysters (which will be also amazing for the recovery because they are packed with ZINC) and agua chiles. Several Tecate beers you should consider too.
It took us 13:30 hours total time with an effective 8:18 hours of running to get from El Desemboque to Bahia de Kino. The selected route featured stunning views: the intense heat and dryness colliding with the deep and cold waters of the Mar de Cortés (Gulf of California) generates an unbelievable energy that is know only to those who have experienced it.
