Yal Ku Lagoon is a large clear lagoon where freshwater flowing from the area's cenotes and underground rivers meets the saltwater of the Caribbean Sea. The area is popular for snorkelers looking to see a variety of fish in the lagoon's clear waters.

Charts display the numerous species of fish which may be seen in the lagoon, and the area's rocky underwater canyonlike terrain mixed with mangrove roots providing shelter for the fish offer an interesting landscape to snorkel through.

There are two businesses that provide access to Yal Ku Lagoon - visitors can follow signs from the town of Akumal to the lagoon area. At reaching a T-intersection near the lagoon, a left turn leads to a quieter no-frills entrance with some basic amenities and a trail that leads to a wooden deck at the lagoon, while a right turn leads to a more upscale entrance with covered seating areas and bronze sculptures placed amongst its walkways. Both entry points offer life jacket, snorkel equipment and locker rentals with changing rooms, showers and bathrooms provided.

Visitors are asked not to wear sunscreen and to shower before entering in order to preserve the ecology and clarity of the lagoon.

Yal Ku Lagoon is open daily from 9am-5pm. Tours can be organized through both entry businesses. Admission at the smaller entry provider is MX$280 for adults and MX$200 for children.

Snorkel in Yal Ku Lagoon Reviews

Although we really enjoyed ourselves, there were a couple other areas (cenotes, mainly) that I would have rather saved my money for. Lots of fun, nonetheless! All about what you're looking to experience.
