Description

One of the most scenic shoreline hikes in Michigan. Quiet beaches, postcard-worthy sunsets, and no cell phone service.

Big Sable Point Lighthouse is perhaps one of the most scenic locations in Michigan. A 3.6 mile round trip hike along the Lake Michigan shoreline will bring you to the destination, which is nestled among sprawling sand dunes. Each evening, it offers a stunning sunset along the sandy beaches.

A short distance from the lighthouse, back-country camping is offered. Those who are looking to obtain a permit must do so through Ludington State Park. Closer to the main entrance is a drive-in campground, which allows both tents and campers.

The surrounding area is filled with hiking trails, both along the sand dunes and in the woods. If you make the journey in the spring or fall, you'll often enjoy the beauty in perfect solitude.

Hike to Big Sable Point Lighthouse Reviews

Awesome views at the lighthouse and surrounding area on the dunes. I camped at Jack-Pine campground, which is a "hike-in" site. Jack-Pine is about a mile walk on a dirt road from the main campgrounds in Ludington State Park, so its not exactly a trek but is quiet enough. I walked to the Lighthouse, hung-out on the beach and then walked inland to surrounding lakes. Would definitely recommend this for a quick weekend get away with beautiful sunsets and sunrises!

Thank you so much to The Outbound for helping me find this hike! We made the drive from Grand Rapids and hiked the lakeshore up to the lighthouse, it was beautiful and almost completely empty. I've never seen the lake look so amazing. Be aware of your footing, and watch for the tide. There was a strong undertow but it was easy to avoid. We got to the lighthouse at the perfect time to sit on the bench in front of the breakwall and watch the sunset. Full discourser; this is what it will always be my favorite place. During the sunset, I proposed to my now fiancé here, and she said yes. I couldn't imagine a more beautiful backdrop for such a special moment in our lives.

This hike is well worth it and is very rewarding at the end. The view of the lake from the top of the lighthouse is amazing
