Description

Added by Shalee Blackmer

Distance: 3 miles roundtrip (minimum). Kayak-only access. Full day adventure/workout. Unique rock formations. Up to 9 miles of paddling.

Only accessible by a kayaking adventure, Turnip Rock is a one-of-a-kind natural wonder.

Although it is close to shore, all land surrounding it is privately owned and therefore not accessible by foot. Kayak rentals can be found in downtown Port Austin.

Most of the trek is over shallow water. Upon arriving to the location, you can beach your kayak on the nearby shore and walk to the base of the rock. There are sea caves a few hundred feet past the destination that are also only accessible by kayak.

The Port Austin Lighthouse can also be seen, 3 miles off shore in Lake Huron. This site is not permitted for rental kayaks, but can be accessed with personal kayaks if the waters are calm. The 6 mile roundtrip adventure will bring you up close and personal with the isolated building perched above the water.

This adventure is one for the books. Give yourself at least 3-5 hours to paddle and explore the area. Lastly, make sure you don't leave before taking a plunge into Lake Huron!

Kayak to Turnip Rock Reviews

As the description says the land surrounding Turnip Rock is "privately owned", which I found a bit disappointing, but the water is quite shallow and warm (in summer) most of the way out to the Rock, making it easy to anchor your yak & rest, play in the waves & take some amazing pictures. There are plenty of interesting rock formations en-route too.

An amazing paddle that is strenuous enough to challenge most kayakers. The Rock is beautiful and is a once in a lifetime view
