A great place for photographers of all skill levels to snap a few pictures!

The upper peninsula of Michigan is connected to the mainland by the Mackinac Bridge. This bridge is quite impressive from a distance and it makes a great object for photography at any time of the day. If you want to get up close to the bridge, try visiting one of the parks located on the north or south end of the bridge.

The park on the southern/mainland side is called Colonial Michilimackinac Park and it is the home of Fort Michilimackinac. This old British fort sits on the west side of the park and can be visited if you have some time to kill. On the east side of the park stands the Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse. Again, if you have some time to kill, I would recommend you visit the lighthouse as well. At this park you can take pictures of the bridge from either angle. There is a small beach area and lawn on the lighthouse side, so that's where people usually take pictures.

On the northern/Upper Peninsula side of the Mackinac Bridge is the Bridge View Park. This park has plenty of parking and a nice paved walkway. The only attraction here is the bridge, but the views are impressive. At night, the bridge is lit up by different colored lights, so don't hesitate to try some night photography.

Be aware that if you cross the bridge you will be required to pay a toll. The toll is about $4-5, and cash is the best way to pay.

I took my pictures from the Island, and they came out super well. Of course you have to pay to get onto the island, but it was worth it for the good hikes, biking, and of course the spectacular photo ops!

Thanks for sharing your tips, Josh! This is so well written and and very helpful. I’m with Explorest and we built an app that helps people discover 60+ beautiful photo locations in Michigan, and I think you’d enjoy it! We include the exact GPS coordinates & tips by the state’s best photographers. We also have locations in New York and California, across Asia and will be debuting in Europe soon. If you have a moment, check it out! https://www.explorest.com/

After not being this far north since I was a child, we went camping and tourist-ing in the Mackinaw area last summer. The bridge is one of the most beautiful things to see at any time day or night. We camped at the Mill Creek Campground, just east of town, and I can not recommend it enough; showers, bathrooms, spots for campers, tents and rustic camping.
