Boyne Mountain’s snowshoe trail is a great opportunity to get out and enjoy a great Michigan winter day. The 3.1 mile (5K) loop is mostly flat and includes open fields and a mix of hardwood and pine trees that offers great scenery, especially after a fresh snow fall.
The trailhead for the snowshoe trail is located across the street from the Boyne Cross Country Ski center parking lot. The trail starts out by winding through the woods sandwiched between the Boyne Mountain Resort maintenance facility and a road, so you’ll hear traffic and equipment noise for the first part of the loop. Fortunately, once you get past the maintenance facility, the trail turns away from the road and heads deeper onto the resort property. About a quarter of the way through the loop, you break out of the hardwoods and get into stands of pine trees.
The trail winds through the pines for a while and offers great photo ops, especially after a fresh snow. While heading through the pines, you’ll stumble across a clearing with an abandoned house, which also offers a photo op. After the pine stands, you’ll hit hardwoods again as you wind your way back around back towards the parking lot.
Boyne welcomes dogs on the snowshoe trail, but they must be kept off the cross country ski trail the snowshoe trail runs along and crosses. You are also welcomed and encouraged to explore off the trial in the woods, with the only restriction being staying off the cross country ski trails.
For information on trial conditions visit or call the Boyne Mountain Cross Country Ski Center.
