12 Photos from My Road Trip across South Africa

A 2,500 km scenic journey from Johannesburg to Cape Town; through the sovereign kingdoms of Swaziland and Lesotho, along the coastal green cliffs that meet the teal blues of the Indian Ocean, and atop the ominous craggy mountains of the Drakensbergs emerging from the rural African plains.

For ten days in early September I drove in aim of seeing as much of South Africa as possible. I was able to rent a Corolla for $10 a day once I arrived in Johannesburg, and then from there the only care in my mind was making it to Cape Town for my departing flight. I talked to locals along the way to find the best landscapes in the area and recommendations they had on where to head next on my journey. The country had much more variety than I had expected, but I was mostly blown away by the region around Cape Town. Ten days wasn't nearly enough time to explore this vast gorgeous land, especially when factoring the multi-cultural aspects within the nation. From poor rural Zulu tribes to wealthy urban Afrikaans, I experienced an entirely new perspective of a state environment where racial divide is extremely prevalent. There are thousands more people that are more adept to tackle the racial conflicts of South Africa, so I will not even attempt to do so here. Rather, my job is to explore the beauty of nature and the adventure that the land has to offer! This is simply a gallery of my favorite images from an unforgettable road trip across the South of Africa.
