Beautiful, jagged rock formations on Lake Superior. Blocks from downtown Grand Marais. Beers and chili at the Gun Flint Tavern.

The town of Grand Marais on the North Shore of Lake Superior is two hours northeast of Duluth and about 4.5 hours from Minneapolis. If you're exploring the Northwoods, stop here for lunch and some exploring on Artists' Point.

Located just blocks away from downtown Grand Marais, Artists' Point is popular with painters, who set up easels on the jagged rock formations and paint the surrounding landscape. Park your car on a city street and walk south toward the Grand Marais Coast Guard Station. Once you get there, turn left and venture onto the rocky coast line.

If you're here during the winter, bundle up. The wind off Lake Superior can be frigid. However, the ice that forms on surrounding rocks make for a beautiful setting well worth the extra layers.

After spending some time on Artists' Point, get a bowl of chilli and a local IPA at the Gun Flint Tavern.

The portion sizes are enough for a big appetite and the selection of craft beers is impressive. If you're around for the evening, the bar has live music. Popular Duluth folk-rock band Trampled by Turtles has played the Tavern stage many times.

Artist's Point is where I learned to love hiking. In 2012, I hiked it with my wife for the first time. From that moment on, I became more and more adventurous. We tried new and more challenging hikes in the area, but have always returned to this one. Right now we're here in the winter, and it's an entirely new challenge. The waves have been large and chunks of it are covered in Lake Superior ice. It's a beautiful hike, even if you're an experienced hiker. You can see the beauty of Grand Marais and the Sawtooth Mountains in the background.

As the description says, you can park your car on the streets of downtown Grand Marais, and after a short walk feel like it's just you and Lake Superior, hanging out! The rocky point has some trees/forest in the middle so once you are out by the lake, you feel like you're further away from town than you actually are. This spot is a must-see if you're staying in town or just driving thru!

Artists point has incredible opportunities for sunrise and sunset. Lots of different rock formations allowing for unique compositions each time. A must visit if you're in the area!
