View historic petroglyphs dating back to almost 7,000 years ago. Walk the trails and gaze upon the 160 acres of restored prairie and visualize how the area may have looked for early settlers of the region.

Located smack dab in the center of farm country, the Jeffers Petroglyphs are something you wouldn't expect to find in southwest Minnesota. If you're in the area or just passing through, this is an interesting place to view petroglyphs that have been dated back to nearly 7,000 years ago.

Beginning inside the Visitors center, take the self-guided, short gravel trail that leads you to the large slabs of red quartzite rock. Some recorded 5,000 carvings have been found on the rocks; including symbols of deer, buffalo, humans, turtles, birds, and arrows. Follow the roped paths around the rock and learn the stories behind these carvings created by American Indian ancestors; interpretative signs explain the carving's significances. Plan a visit either in the early morning or early evening hours for best views of the petroglyphs; the lighting and angle of the sun affects the intensity at which the carvings can be seen.

There is also a prairie trail (3/4 mile) that you can hike that begins at the end of the gravel trail. This grassy path will take you through the restored prairie surrounding the rock, from which you can observe native flowers and grasses. The prairie trail eventually leads back to the Visitors Center.

The Visitor Center also features family-friendly displays and games that you can interact with, as well as hosting various activities throughout the spring and summer; there is a small admission fee ($7 adults, $5 kids) as well.

A great place to check out if you are anywhere nearby. Probably not a sole destination, but definitely worth checking out if you have any interest in native history. And if you don’t now, you should when you leave.

Absolutely beautiful and amazing. Loved the history of the place and the quiet beauty of nature. Was kind of expecting a longer hike but that was only thing, otherwise 10/10 recommend!
