A remote day hike with lakes, a pond, and forested trail along the way.

This day hike portion of the 23 mile Tuxachanie Trail (white blazes) starts by the shore of Airey Lake. Shortly the trail turns and follows Tuxachanie Creek through a longleaf pine forest. You will pass by a duck pond, as well.

At the first T junction after the pond, turn left. At the next three Y junctions keep to your right, with a creek crossing in between. You will reach a small lake at 7 miles, which is a good place to turn around for a 14 mile roundtrip hike.

Hike the Tuxachanie Trail Reviews

I chose to start at the trailhead on Hwy 49, hike to Airey Lake, and come back (11.5 miles). The lake was nice, but I can't say the same for the trail itself. There are some sights to be seen, but I would say about 90% of the trail is boring and really drags on. Each hour hiking felt like a chore rather than fun. I would find other local trails instead.

Nice trail and very open. A couple of streams for water too.
