Canoe or Kayak down the Okatoma Creek, which offers several class 1 falls and shoots. It makes for a fun half-day or full-day trip.

For this trip, I went through Okatoma Outdoor Post, a local Seminary business that rents out canoes/kayaks, hauls private canoes/kayaks, and shuttles customers to their landing. They offer three float trips between Seminary and Sanford (I chose the Upper Short to Fairchild trip).

Float Trips

  • The Lower Run begins at Fairchild Landing and ends at Sanford. This trip is approximately 6 creek miles and float time is 2 to 3 hours.

  • Upper Short to Fairchild of the Okatoma begins at Seminary (MS HWY 590) and ends at Fairchild’s Landing. It is approximately 7 creek miles with the 3 main falls of the upper run. The trip usually takes 3 to 4 hours; this allows ample time for picnicking and swimming, which makes this the most popular float.

  • The Upper Run of Okatoma begins at Seminary (MS HWY 590) and ends at Sanford (MS HWY 598). It is approximately 13 creek miles with 3 main waterfalls.  The trip usually takes 4 to 6 hours; this allows ample time for picnicking and swimming.

Though not difficult, the water can be fairly fast moving, and there are several class 1 falls and shoots along the creek. The spring and fall months have higher amounts of rain and offer better rides.

Please take all trash out with you, be sure to take plenty of pictures, and have a great day out in nature!

Kayak Okatoma Creek Reviews

Good for beginners and people who looking for awesome time!

I came here with a volunteer group from USM, and we kayaked down the Okatoma cleaning up trash. The rapids aren't big enough to worry about if you're inexperienced, but they are big enough to be fun to go through!
