Beautiful views of Mount Frazier, the Great Plains, and the Bob Marshall Wilderness on the Mount Werner Trail.

The Mount Werner Trail starts at the Blackleaf Canyon Trailhead in the Montana front range of the Rocky Mountains. On a side note, Blackleaf Canyon is also a popular rock climbing area.

On the trail, you'll walk along Blackleaf Creek, and Muddy Creek so water will be available during the hike in case you bring your filter/purifier. As you hike, you'll see magnificent views of the Bob Marshall Wilderness and the Great Plains to the east.

Once you summit Mount Werner, you'll have gorgeous views of Mount Frazier across Blackleaf Canyon to the north and Mount Wright to the west.

Mount Werner Trail Notes

  • 1-mile after the trailhead you will hit your first junction. Stay to the left for Mount Werner. The trail to the right heads up...
  • About a 1/10th of a mile further, you will see the junction for the Mount Werner Trail. Turn left heading south.
  • At about 2.15 miles, you will come to another fork. Stay to your right for Mount Werner. The trail will start to follow Muddy Creek.
  • At about 4-miles, and at elevation of approximately 6,400 feet, you will leave Muddy Creek and turn right heading up Mount Werner.
  • For the next mile, you are going to ascend 1,600 vertical feet. You may have to do your own route finding as you near the top, but it'll be a ton of fun.

Hiking or camping permits are not necessary for this area of the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex.
