Description

Photo opportunities abound at the National Bison Range. Enjoy a scenic drive, nature walks, a picnic, and plenty of wildlife viewing. In one day, it is possible to see bison, elk, deer, coyotes, black bears, eagles, and many more animals that call the range home.
The Bison Range is open year round, however, the road is mostly closed in the winter months, so the best times are the spring, summer or fall.
The Range was established in 1908 to help preserve a natural population of the nearly extinct animal. Today, between 350-500 bison roam the hills.
You will want to stop at the visitor center to get a pass, a map, and learn from a park ranger where animals have been spotted that day. There is a small museum and restrooms located in the visitor center as well.
From the visitor center, the road spirals up and back down Red Sleep Mountain. Along the way, you will see areas to pull over for scenic views, and a few marked trails for nature walks. The peak, at 4,885 feet, offers excellent views of the Mission Mountain Range and the Mission Valley. There are outhouse restrooms located at the top as well as a short hiking trail. Be aware of signs posted by the park ranger for animal activity. Also, make sure your brakes are working properly, because it's all down hill from here- steep grades and sharp curves!
Take your time driving through the reserve! For your safety, stay in your car except for in designated walking areas, and most importantly, give the animals respect and space! Take only photos, leave only footprints.
