Camp at Upper Lehman Creek Campground, Great Basin NP

Baker, Nevada

Description

Added by Mayson

Located in Great Basin National Park, one of the America's least visited National Parks which does not disappoint. You can see everything from gorgeous alpine lakes, to ancient Bristlecone Pine Trees, and the Milk Way set against a stunning night sky filled with stars.

Great Basin National Park is located just a few miles east of the Nevada/Utah border in White Pine County. This beautiful park lies approximately 4.5 hours northeast of Las Vegas, NV and about 4 hours southwest of Salt Lake City, UT near the small town of Baker, NV.

The Upper Lehman Campground is found at 7,752ft about 8 miles up the Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive from the Great Basin National Park Visitor Center just past the Lower Lehman Creek Campground. It is primarily open mid-April to October, but the season can vary due to snow levels. Water is also available through much of this time depending on the weather.

The campground has 22 campsites, including one handicap site. These sites are first come first serve so it is highly recommended to arrive early in order to claim a spot or wait for one to open up. Some of the best campsites are on the south side of the campground where the sites are bordered by beautiful Lehman Creek and its serene sounds of rushing water.

Each site is comprised of a fire pit, a picnic table and a tent pad area. Water spigots can be found around the campground for washing dishes and cooking- with warning signs to boil before drinking. Vaulted toilets are also available along with various trash receptacles around the campground.

Near the entrance there is also a small day-use picnic area available.

At night through the trees that surround and are found within the campground, if you look up you can see the stars and on a clear night with little moonlight the Milky Way. Great Basin National Park sports a tagline, "See the milky way" because, "Half the park is after dark." It is one of the darkest National Parks in the nation and is subject to little light pollution.

It is worth noting that the temperatures at night can reach at or below freezing depending on the time of year. It can be chilly at night even in the summer. Be properly prepared for the season in which you are camping to stay safe. Also be sure to pack enough food and other supplies due to the remoteness of the campground and park. The nearby towns of Baker and Ely can be used to get supplies in the case of emergency, but they are limited in what they provide.
