Amazing display of wildflowers, with big clusters of lupines. Picture perfect setting: views of the white mountains, meadow, typical New England scenery. Extremely accessible. Great photo location.
Every year, more or less around the second week of June, the village of Sugar Hill boasts a magnificent show of lupines. There are several concentrations of lupines in fields along the road, but the highlight of a visit to Sugar Hill is the small hillside near St. Matthew's Church. The vistas towards the white mountain range and the quintessential New England white church are nice year round, but make sure to be there when the lupines are out.
This place is only a short drive from other highlights of this region, such as Franconnia Notch State Park. Be aware, however, that the high vegetation is infested with ticks this time of year. Make sure to check you are not carrying any on you before you leave.
