Hike Snowy Mountain Fire Tower

Snowy Mountain is the largest mountain in this region of the Adirondacks, and with a 2100'+ elevation gain over the 3.5 mile ascent is actually more work than some of the famed High Peaks. Going north on Rt 30, the parking lot is marked as Snowy Mountain on the right hand side. If you make it to the village of Indian Lake you've done too far, but at least you can grab a milkshake at Stewart's before turning back!

The trailhead is directly across from the parking lot, be sure to sign in before you start making your way up. The trail is well marked and well maintained, pretty impossible to lose your way. There are a few spots along the way up large enough to pitch a tent off the trail, and several people were camping my last trip up.

The first two and a half miles are fairly flat and go by quick. In spring when the water is flowing there are a few creek crossings that can be messy, but the wooden walkways do pretty well to keep you mud free. The last mile is where the difficulty really cranks up and it does not ease up until you get to the top. It's absolutely worth the workout, so keep that in mind.

Upon arriving at the top you're immediately treated to a gorgeous view which you can soak in while you catch your breath. The top of the mountain is fairly small and flat, with three major attractions that form a triangle. The first being this initial overlook. From there you can move northwest-ish on a little foot path that ends at a little two level rock slab no more than 12 feet wide. A perfect seat with a breathtaking view, fantastic for a picnic or in my case, a fresh snowy donut. It's also apparently an excellent place for a proposal, as the cute couple who showed me this ledge told me their story and they seemed happy as can be.

From there head south to the fire tower which will climb above the treeline and give the best show of all. Unlike some of the Adirondack fire towers, this one is in good order and is safe all the way to the top. Once you've had your fill, head on down the way you came up and be sure to encourage the kind folks suffering on the way up!
