Rock Climb at Notch Mountain in the Adirondacks

Wilmington, New York

Description

Added by Katherine Haveman

Great beginning slab climbing for someone who wants to experience the sights of the Adirondacks.

Park at the Moss Cliff Parking area on Route 86 and cross the road to the trailhead for Copperas Pond. Make a short but steep approach to Notch Mountain Slabs, taking a left when the trail appears to split. The immediate face has four single pitch climbs, but skirting the face to the left brings you to the more exposed slab where 3-4 pitches will get you to the summit of Notch Mountain with Whiteface in the background.

With a moderate angle and super grippy rock, you’ll be flying up to the summit with lots of places to place gear and a vegetated ledge for easy belay.

From the summit you can see Copperas Pond nestled in the trees on the left, which is certainly worth the hike to for a quick dip before returning to the car.

For your descent, follow a steep path that winds to the right of the shorter face, spitting you out back where you came in.

Notes: Our climbs were guided by Alpine Adventures (based in Keene) and they were amazing for beginners who don’t have all of their own gear.

We also climbed at King Phillips Wall and Sharp Bridge Campground if you are looking for more beginner routes.

When approaching the rock, watch for poison ivy and try to stick to the trails.
