This is an amazing 17kms day hike from Awaroa to Torrent Bay. Hitting the golden sand beaches and lush forests.

I would say give it 6-7 hours. The starting point is the Awaroa Bay. In our case it is the beach front lodge Meadow Bank Homestead. You might be hiking and camping or lodging here. Or you could possibly get here via Water Taxi from Kaiteriteri to start the hike from Awaroa .

The first hike is from Awaroa over the Tonga Saddle to Onetahuti. In this hike, you get to relish the beautiful golden sand beach flanked by impressive granite headlands. You can also visit the Tonga Quarry historic site. We took a lunch break at the Bark bay. An hour to relax, swim and just explore the beach. This is definitely my personal favorite with fantastic views all around. You only have one stop to fill in the water i.e. at the Bark bay beach, in this hike. So have plenty of water for the 1st half of the journey and fill in ample water for the 2nd. You also get to use proper rest-rooms here. Also there's no food available anywhere in-between. You have to carry your own food-supplies throughout.

As you re-start your hike to the Torrent bay, you will enjoy the amazing views of headlands, estuaries and beaches framed by the native forest. You will get to cross the swing bridge at Falls river and then continue on the tree lined track. This is a pretty cool hike down to the Torrent Bay! For us this is the end of the day, where we halted for the night at a lodge in the torrent bay. You can hike-on, camp or lodge here. It's a pretty straightforward hike again, with great views and clear directions. Mostly the terrain is flat, except occasional hills. I like to keep a map handy in my back-pack and hence I would suggest that :).
