Description

This 2 day, 1 night backpacking trip offers some of New Zealand's best forest and alpine views. You'll also be rewarded with a pretty amazing camp spot.

DAY 1

Greyneys Shelter (SH73) – Goat Pass - 5h / 9km (5.6mi) / +400m (1300ft)

The route starts here, near Greyneys Shelter on SH73, 5 km (3.1mi) south of Arthur’s Pass Village. You will need to cross Bealey River after it meets the Mingha River, but don't try to cross the river if the Bealey River is too high.

Once you have crossed the Bealy River, follow the Mingha riverbed (a few river crossings necessary) for 1h. You then get to the point where the riverbed transforms into a gorge. A marked track enters the bush on the western side. The track climbs well above the gorge on to Dudley Knob, and then makes its way back to the river, close to the bush line.

Shortly after the track emerges from the bush there is small hut, Mingha Bivvy. From here follow the marked trail, up to Goat Pass.

Goat Pass to Lake Mavis - 2h / 2km (1.2mi) / +500m (1640ft)

Climb the steep tussock and scree on the spur running east from Goat Pass, then follow the cairned ridge route. The shore of the lake allows for 2 or three good tents spots. The camp spot is located here.

DAY 2

Lake Mavis to Taruahuna Pass - 3h / 3km (1.8mi) / +300m (984ft) / -600m (2000ft)

From the lake, an ascent on boulders and screes brings you to the Edwards on the broad shoulder north of Pt1978. From there it is a fun descent – scree, bluffs and more chunky scree – to Taruahuna Pass.

Taruahuna Pass to SH73 - 4h / 13km (8mi) / - 800m (2600ft)

The track to Edwards Hut is straightforward, following the true left side of the valley. From the hut, a 3h walk will bring you back to the SH73 by following a well-marked path that cuts across a luscious forest.
