Brooke Waimarama Sanctuary hikes

The Brook Waimarama Sanctuary is located in Nelson, New Zealand. This is a 715 hectare mainland “ecological island” sanctuary . Visitors are encouraged here. As you get to the visitor’s centre, there’s a map with several hiking tracks right outside the sanctuary. Most of them are often closed, as they are currently working on building a fence to protect the endangered species. The staff at the visitors centre were fantastic and they suggested a few hikes to me, per my interest of chasing waterfalls. The 1st one I did was a lovely walk (35mins) alongside the stream. This takes you through diverse secondary forest full of ferns and fruiting trees. You will see a beautiful full waterfall in a divider path. I caught a few pictures and went forth till the end of the track. At this point, I didn’t return. I took a diversion to the upper dam (there are signs and directions) which is a steep terrain. I went on and caught a bunch of waterfalls here. There’s a bridge you hit at the end of the hike, where there are directions to get back to the visitors centre. All in all my hike and the exploration lasted for 2 hours. About 12 km. Very straightforward with a map upfront and directions at different hikes. You just need water and may be a couple of power-bars to keep you going, incase you decide to keep exploring the different tracks.
