See what Rotorua is about right in the CBD!
If you're in Rotorua and taking a chill day, definitely check out Sulphur Point in the city centre!
A quick and easy walk from the carpark, Sulphur Point is on the Southern end of Lake Rotorua and is a sulfurous area that lies on top of an active geothermal field.
Find small mud pools and sulphur vents in this wildlife sanctuary and refuge while getting a good sniff of the air from a mixture of the lake breeze and hot geothermal water. You'll notice in Rotorua the smell can often sneak up on you. But there's no avoiding it here!
"Geothermal soils are infertile with unusually high levels of sulphur and iron. Not only do plants have to tolerate poor soil but they’re also exposed to steam and toxic gases." On the walk, you'll notice what looks like orange moss on the plants.
Read more about this amazing sulfuric area here and please stay on the path at all times. The murky water is an acidic level of pH 3.5!
This is a short walk that can easily take up more time!
