This hike offers amazing views of Bruce Stream and Waimakariri River Valley. Bealey Spur is also a typically drier hike during wet weather in Arthur's Pass.

This moderately difficult climb affords amazing views of the Waimakariri River Valley as well as Bruce Stream. It is not an incredibly difficult hike, although in winter and early spring there will be snow and ice on the ground, making it more challenging. There are few vertical cliff faces, and care must still be taken in high winds or low visibility.

About half of the walk is in beech forest, while the remainder passes through subalpine scrub, tussocklands, and some rocky terrain near the top. Around 6.2 mi (10 km) in, you will pass Bealey Spur Hut, a historic sheep musterer's hut (traditionally called Top Hut) where you can bunk up for the night or pitch a tent. The hut is usually overrun with mice, so camping is recommended. This hut is also traditionally used by deer and chamois hunters.

The hike can easily be done as a day walk; alternatively, camping near the spur can turn it into an overnight trip. This is a great location to catch sunset over Mount Rolleston, or a sunrise lighting up the Waimakariri Valley. In good weather, this is also a good hike for children. Note that there is no cell service on this tramp.

Hike Arthur's Pass' Bealey Spur Reviews

I got this track recommended to me by the Arthur's Pass Department of Conservation office. It was gorgeous the entire way. You can continue up through the forest and onto the ridgeline to catch some more views and make it a little harder. 100% recommended to anyone looking for a good day hike in the area!

Did it this morning to get away from the rains in Arthur's Pass. Absolutely beautiful.
