Distance: 10 km (6.2 miles) roundtrip. Duration: 4 hours. Elevation gain: 1,600 ft. Walking distance from town. Beautiful views of Dunedin Harbor, Southern Alps, and surrounding ridges.

From the car park, follow the trail as it begins to go uphill. The slope is fairly gradual at first. Once you enter the trees it begins to get steeper and continues to climb until you are above tree line. You then begin to get views of the city and the harbor, along with mountains in the far distance. Continue along the trail for another half hour to an hour until you reach the top.

There are two trailheads for the track. The second is at Flagstaff-Whare Flat Road: 45°50'04.2"S 170°27'04.3”E.

Hike the Pineapple Track Reviews

Dunedin is one of those spots people have to make time for in their travels and I think that's part of what's so special about the areas here. A bit off the typical travel itinerary, awesome uni town, and the most epic nature. This was one of the first tramps I did when I was going to school at Otago and we started with a dirt path going through the nearby neighborhoods, a shaded forest, and all the sudden a steep climb that opens up to the Taieri Plains and city views. We did this for sunset in July and the top had snow. First time in my life, I had experienced snow in July. The views around you and the surrounding golden tussock was a magical moment at sunset!
