This is a scenic hike up to the Mt. Victoria look-out where you get to see amazing panoramic views of Wellington.

The Mount Victoria walk takes you up to the Mt. Victoria look-out where you get to see amazing panoramic views of Wellington. There are several routes that will get you there. I’m sharing the route I normally take.

I normally prefer the following hike from the northern end of the southern walkway, located at the Oriental Parade. I take this route as it is close to my neighbourhood. And throughout the hike, you get to see fantastic views.

As you walk by the Oriental Parade, at the sign Southern Walkway, take a right and start walking up the paved trail. At the second switch-back take the stairs. You will see a Map and directions here. Go right, keep walking. Go up the stairs through 3 more switch backs.

Once you’re up the stairs, take a right at the junction and keep walking through the crescent road until you reach the intersection with Grafton Road. You will see a bunch of stairs again. Take the stairs and keep walking to the next intersection. Take a left on Roseneath terrace and a right on Thane Road. Keep going on the Thane road past Robieson street. Here you will see an intersection with the lookout road. Keep going until you get to a few stairs. Take the stairs.

Your 1st stop would be Centennial Memorial lookout. You can enjoy the centennial Memorial Lookout as you wish, and as you walk past it, you will see the Mount Victoria look out. Take the stairs to the viewing platform. Enjoy the fantastic panoramic views! This is my favourite view point in Wellington.

When you’re done retrace your way back. Enjoy the scenery.

As Wellington is often a windy city, you’d enjoy the whole hike more if you do it on a bright sunny day with little wind. The 1st part of the hike is steep and then it’s a pretty steady climb. This hike comprises of sidewalks, sign posted walkway and public roads. It’s a 40-45 minute hike up and hike back would be much less, say 30 minutes. I would give it 80 minutes in total.

This is a Wellington must-do!

Hike to the Mount Victoria Lookout Reviews

Wellington is a city with loads of outdoor activities to do, but the walk up Mt Victoria is the fastest way to get onto a trial and away from the concrete. It's an easy walk through impressive forests, which I enjoyed slowly meandering, though you can do it really quickly as well. Nice way to break up an afternoon in town.
