Description

Rugged New Zealand West Coast Backcountry. Beautifully situated, cozy, hut with spectacular sunrise potential.

This trail is unique in that it is community run, solely by volunteers.

The track starts at a signposted car park just short of an hour east of Hokitika. From here the fairly short, but steep track climbs just over 1000m through native bush following a marked and well trodden trail. About half an hour from the hut the trail breaks out above the tree line. The beautifully situated hut is found close to a steep ridge, with amazing views in all directions. The hut has 4 bunks, but will sleep more on the floor if mattresses are brought. Expect 2-4 hours to reach the hut.

An unmarked trail continues on up the ridge and within an hour the summit can be gained. Return to the hut and follow the trail leading down the southern slope of Mt. Brown to complete the loop. This section of the track is slightly less well-groomed, and in places even steeper than the previous part. This trail will eventually lead to the valley below, care must be taken in places so as to not lose the trail.  The track gets easier once getting down to the valley floor, here the trail will follow the Styx River all the way to the road and the end of the track, from where it is a 3km walk along the road back to the car park. Expect 3-4 hours coming down from the hut.

There are somewhat limited water sources after leaving the valleys on both ends of the trail, so carry a decent amount with you. The hut has a water tank which should normally be full.

This track should generally be done in fair weather, as sections of the trail will get very slippery during rain. Navigating the ridge in white-out cloud conditions can be tricky as well. Note that early mornings tend to be less cloudy than the rest of the day, but this part of the world is well known for very moody weather!

Always carry out everything you brought with you!

Enjoy!
