A long hike through thick forest and over alpine high country leads to the summit of Mt. Isobel, looking over the Organ, Amuri, Glen Wye and Hanmer Ranges. A great hike for beginners and kids.
Start at the Waterfall Track Car Park. Follow the Waterfall Track along Dog Stream and through thick beech forest until the intersection with the Mt. Isobel Track (all intersections are well signed). Here, a quick detour brings you to Dog Stream Falls. Return to the track and head up the steep and sometimes narrow path which leads you above tree line. Continue upward towards the eastern shoulder of Mt Isobel. Once you arrive at the ridge crest follow the track to the right until you arrive at the summit.
Summit views soar over the Organ, Amuri, Glen Wye and Hanmer Ranges. The town of Hanmer Springs and the surrounding farms are easily identified. Return the way you came and stop for a drink in town on your way out!
Note: This is a great track for introducing young hikers to longer summit routes. There are a few nice lookouts along the route above tree line that allow for an early, but rewarding turn-around point.
