Description
Added by Tobin Akehurst
This short and sweet hike to the summit of Mt. Sunday is situated in the center of a grand alpine basin. It is also the set location of the Kingdom of Edoras in the Lord of the Rings Films.
From the car park follow an old road track / stream bed until it narrows into a scenic walking track. Cross the swing bridge and ascend the south side of the mountain to its picturesque summit. Alpine views abound in all directions. It's easy to see why it was selected as a LOTR set location.
This short track requires very little preparation and no special abilities to enjoy. Just bring your sense of adventure, and maybe a picnic. This adventure is on private property but the owners have allowed the Department of Conservation and visitors to use the area freely. It's all well signed with a parking area and map posted. Definitely show respect and appreciation towards the owners by following strict Leave No Trace ethics.
