Big Hump Mountain stands over the Roan Highlands with its gorgeous fields, epic boulder clusters, and unique wooden fence around it's peak. The color of the mountain can completely change depending on which way the wind is blowing the grass.
Towering over Little Hump Mountain, Big Hump Mountain offers one of the clearest views on the Appalachian Trail. Big Hump Mountain is located in the Roan Highlands North of Bradley Gap. This peak is not as traveled as other popular hikes in the area despite its massive size because of the intense uphill climb to the summit.
Similar to the hike to Bradley Gap, park at the Yellow Mountain Gap Trailhead and follow the Roaring Fork Trail until you intersect the Appalachian Trail (White Blaze) approximately 3/4 mile into the hike. Take a right onto the Appalachian Trail and follow the rutted, dirt and rock path for 3 miles until you reach the summit of Big Hump Mountain. From there, you can explore the backside of the mountain by following the Appalachian Trail or head back to the trailhead.
Big Hump Mountain is almost completely bald covered only by tall, wavy grass and a few trees. The color of the mountain can completely change depending on which way the wind is blowing the grass. The hike up the mountain is steep and grueling, but grants a few downhill reprieves. Massive boulder clusters litter the side of the trail. These boulders are fun the climb and an ideal place to snag an epic picture. Towards the peak, you will cross a wooden fence that once contained horses and cattle. At the peak, take in a full 360-degree panoramic view of the highlands.
Be certain to bring plenty of water. This hike will take longer than other hikes of the same distance due to its continual steep incline. Bring a light rain jacket as storms are known to roll in quickly.

Incredible view at the top, or even below the peak. The hike up from the 19E route is difficult, but the view is definitely worth it. Parking at the trailhead area is risky - I had my truck broken into, as well as two other cars. Police said it happens a lot.

I did this as an overnight trip and camped on top of Big Hump. It was quite an experience and I was lucky enough to have an amazing sunrise! The hike up was tough - especially because I had a few “here’s the summit!” followed by “damn! Where’s the summit?!”
