Description

Added by Mark Cabot

This hike will take you to the top of the highest mountain in the Lofoten archipelago, Møysalen. Do it midsummer and watch the never setting sun circle around you.

This is a steep hike that is close to mountain climbing on some parts. Not for people afraid of heights. Also it's a must to be in good shape to be prepared for this.

The route is partially marked and there is a path from Kaljord in to Lonkfjorden. Barely one kilometer from inner Nordbotn, you will find an old railway. Follow the ore tip at the head of the North Valley.

From here the trail steepens up to Memuruskaret, well 500 m. Further north-northeast and cross the river coming from the upper Møysal lake. Up the mountainside to the glacier, follow the western edge. From passage between glacier and upper Møysal lake follow Møysal ridge eastwards to the top. A few places you must keep a little to the left to avoid the steepest sections.

A chain is laid out in the three hardest places. Once you summit, enjoy the great view from the top! Take the same route back to trailhead when you're ready to head down.

Some people hike from the trailhead that is marked on the map. Or you can hire a local fisherman to boat you into the bottom of the mountain. You save some time and get a nice boat ride.
