Description

Added by Improvised Journeys

Explore a network of trails that traverse a densely wooded area in the midst of a developed park and suburban area. Running and Mountain Biking are great at this park.

Bluff Creek Park is just off Hefner Rd., to the north of Lake Hefner in northwest Oklahoma City. This park is free to access and park at, and contains a main path for jogging and walking only, as well as a network of trails for mountain biking.

To access the main trails, simply take the main path under the sign and over the wooden bridge. No bikes allowed here. The loop is signed as one mile, but with plenty of detours available to make exploring the entire trail network at least a 2-3 mile effort. Most side trails go only a handful of steps off the main path and dead end at a pond or grove of trees. All worthy photo opportunities. In the morning, deer are commonly seen grazing.

The mountain biking trail network is separate and can be accessed from the main parking lot by a very obvious slot in the trees. It can feel like you are entering a mystical wonderland under the canopy of summer trees. In winter, it will be more bare. The terrain is rolling and rooty but not overly technical. Several creek crossings occur on the mountain bike path, as these trails generally take the lower ground and the walking paths are built above.

Mountain biking here is filled with short and tight turns. There are no notable climbs. The path can become muddy, and due to being so near the creek and well-shaded, is not at its best if a recent rain has occurred. In fact there is a sign warning against MTB use in these conditions. The park can look and feel quite different in different seasons. Pictures posted here are from the dead of summer (on the longest day of the year) and from January.
